The Central Hall with the oil painting of Henrik Sørensens work, "Administration and Festivity", painted in 1938-50. Function The
City Hall is the seat of Oslo's political and administrative leadership. Meetings of the most important political bodies are held here. The City Hall is open to the city's own population for certain social functions and
for civil confirmations. Municipal entertainment takes place in the City Hall and a great number of events in the city's official life are celebrated here. The Oslo City Hall is also a popular tourist attraction.
Artistic Ornamentation A number of artists were selected on the basis of a competition announced in 1936 and commissioned by the City Hall to create specific works of art. The City Hall is famous for its large
frescoes. The motifs of the decorations show aspects of Norwegian history, culture and economic life. References to World War ll. are frequent. All material used in the City Hall is Norwegian. Due to its rich
ornamentation, the City Hall is quite representative of the artistic talent in Norway in the first half of this century. |
